WHY EDUCATION?
“Every child has the right to learn. Although more children than ever before are enrolled in school, the duty-bearers obligated to realize this right for every child are collectively failing to improve learning, and this failure is deep and broad, and has significant consequences. Many children lack the knowledge and skills to realize their full potential and maximize their contribution to their communities”. - UNICEF
The education gap is growing, reveals the report, “Every Child Learns, UNICEF Education Strategy 2019–2030“, from UNICEF. And, this education gap is expected to continue on this growth trajectory.
The world’s population is growing and by 2030 it is expected 63% of the world’s population will be living in low-income and lower-middle-income countries, access to equitable education will also become a bigger problem.
Currently only half of the world’s preschool-age children are enrolled in pre-primary education. Meaning, there are at least 175 million pre-primary school-age children, on top of the 262 million primary and secondary school-age children – that’s one in five – that are still not accessing education.
And to compound this problem, by 2030, it is expected that 80% of the world’s poor will live in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
More children will find themselves in a position where access to education is not an option and achieving any education level – even at the most basic level – will be out of reach for many.
Education has consistently proven to be a dependable tool to help children reach beyond the boundaries of their communities and break free of the generational cycle of poverty.
Without equitable access to quality education globally, one in five children risk being disadvantaged further.
